Up until three years ago Emily played tennis competitively and was a member of the Remuera Racquets Club Caro Reserve team and won a number of Auckland tennis age group tournaments. She was also a keen runner, School cross country champ and belonged to ACA cross country club.
Her sporting direction then took a change, initially to triathlon and then predominantly cycling.
